Into Formerly Skinny

20 Mar

The other day in our Bible study group someone had the best ice breaker question. It was a “Would you rather” type question. So here it goes:

Would you rather gain 50 pounds or be in debt $10,000?

Tough, right! Really what would you choose? I go back and forth. The gaining of 50 pounds would be kinda fun. I think. But it would take forever to get it back off. But who really wants to be in debt?

Then I threw it at Mark: would he rather I gain 50 pounds or we would be in debt $10,000?

Ugh. He didn’t like that! Overall it was a pretty fantastic ice breaker question.

And then we got into our bible study and hit on an awesome quote from Mark Driscoll’s Real Marriage:

God made one man and one woman. He did not ask them if they wanted someone tall or short, light or heavy, pale or dark skinned, with long or short hair. In short, He did not permit them to develop a standard of beauty. Instead, He gave them each a spouse as a standard of beauty… Unlike other standards of beauty, a spouse changes over time. This means if your spouse is tall, you are into tall. If your spouse is skinny, you are into skinny. If your spouse is twenty, you are into twenty. When your spouse is sixty, you are no longer into twenty, but rather into sixty. And if your spouse used to be skinny, you were into skinny, but now you are into formerly skinny.

There is something that is just beautiful about that. That as Mark and I change, we are committed to making each other the standard of beauty for our spouse – even if that means being into formerly skinny.

So I suppose the answer to the would you rather question is to go for the extra squishiness and Mark will be into formerly skinny. 🙂
